WinnieWinnie Tham is a Director of Amica Law LLC, with more than 13 years of experience in the field of intellectual property. She has gained experience in a broad spectrum of areas in intellectual property, although her area of specialization is dealing with intellectual property protection and management in Singapore and overseas. This includes:-
  • Advising on legal aspects and strategies for intellectual property protection for new brands, products, inventions and designs;

  • Conducting trade mark, patent and design searches, evaluating the results and making recommendations to clients;

  • Filing and prosecution of patents, trademarks and designs;

  • Maintenance and renewal of intellectual property;

  • IP audits and due diligence;

  • Coordinating global intellectual property filing programs for clients, both local and international multi national companies.

She also deals in the drafting of intellectual property contracts covering licensing, assignments and other transactional aspects of intellectual property and technology, as well as the follow up recordal of such transactions with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore. Apart from pure assignment and licensing transactions, Winnie has also been involved in the drafting and negotiation of trade mark/patent/design licence and assignments in the merger and acquisition of companies and/or their assets in various fields including property, life sciences and the food and beverage industry. In addition, she is able to handle the due diligence on intellectual property, where her knowledge in the registration aspects of intellectual property is highly relevant.


With her background in the life sciences, Winnie advises on regulatory aspects in the pharmaceuticals field.

Winnie also handles contentious matters at Registry and court level. She undertakes trade mark opposition matters, trade mark and patent invalidation and revocation actions. She has also been involved in infringement cases in Singapore in the higher courts, and the Court of Appeal, particularly in the patents arena. Amongst the court cases she has been involved in are:-

  • a landmark patent infringement cases in the life sciences field involving the HIV-2 virus

  • patent infringement involving emergency lift systems

  • patent infringement involving construction equipment

In terms of professional qualifications, Winnie is a registered patent agent in Singapore, as well as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. She also has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and was called to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1991 and to the Singapore Bar in 1993. Apart from her law degree, she has a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in pharmacology, with a minor in biochemistry. She is active as a member of AIPPI and the Association of Singapore Patent Agents, and sits on the editorial team for the Asian Patent Attorney’s Association. Winnie is also a member of the Patent Examination Committee of the Board of Patent Examiners, and is involved in the setting and marking of the examination questions.
