Melvin graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Second Class Honours (Upper) from the National University of Singapore in 2008 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2009. He was placed on the Final Year as well as the Overall Dean’s List in NUS and received the APAA Patent Law Book Prize awarded to the best student in the Intellectual Property course.
Melvin's main areas of practice include general civil and commercial litigation pertaining mainly to intellectual property matters, general advisory work on intellectual property issues, trade mark management and prosecution as well as commercial transactional and advisory work.
Sample matters on which he has been involved in are:
- Assisted in a High Court trial involving a cross-border contractual dispute totalling US$5 million relating to the manufacture and sale of intermediate bulk containers in Indonesia.
- Assisted in a High Court trial involving misrepresentation in a cross-border sale and purchase of shares by an overseas investment company.
- Assisted in a contractual dispute involving the alleged failure to pay for the setting up of an integrated computer system for a local educational institution.
- Advising on litigious intellectual property matters with respect to trade marks, passing off, copyright, registered designs and confidential information.
- Advising on local banking secrecy laws and the international obligations arising out of Singapore’s double-taxation agreements with regard to disclosure and exchange.
- Advising on and drafting of various intellectual property and commercial agreements, including: intellectual property and know-how licensing agreements; supply, distribution, manufacturing and purchase agreements; non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements; and employment contracts.
- Filing and prosecution of trade marks, both locally and internationally, for major international corporations.
